The significant advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has taken manufacturing industries into new era of advanced manufacturing. At least two concepts — Industry 4.0 and cloud manufacturing—have been proposed and gain more and more attentions from both industries and academia.
Industry 4.0, or the fourth Industrial Revolution, is the current trend of automation in manufacturing whereby technologies such as cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, and cloud computing are increasingly implemented and entrenched in production systems and beyond. Industry 4.0 creates what has been called “smart factories”. Over the Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems communicate and cooperate with each other and with humans in real time, and via the Internet of Services, both internal and cross-organizational services can be offered and used by participants of the value network. The concept of Industry 4.0 is conceived in 2011, and since then, more than one thousand publications have been published.
Cloud manufacturing is a new model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable manufacturing resources (e.g., manufacturing software tools, manufacturing equipment, and manufacturing capabilities) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. Since the inception of the cloud manufacturing concept in 2010, more than almost two thousands publications have been published.
In order for readers to have an overall understanding of the current research status of Industry 4.0 and Cloud Manufacturing, some statistical materials of the publications for both topics are provided from the following five dimensions: year, source, affiliation, country/territory, and type.

Note: The literature search was carried out in Scopus using the query string TITLE-ABS-KEY(“Industry 4.0”) OR TITLE-ABS-KEY(“Industrie 4.0”) for Industry 4.0 and TITLE-ABS-KEY(“cloud manufacturing”) OR TITLE-ABS-KEY(“cloud-based manufacturing”) OR TITLE-ABS-KEY(“cloud-based design and manufacturing”) for Cloud Manufacturing on 25th of May 2017. This search has shown 1,152 and 1,808 documents for Industry 4.0 and Cloud Manufacturing respectively.
